Created on land originally leased from Harrogate Corporation, the garden was established by members of the then newly formed Northern Horticultural Society (NHS) and opened its gates to visitors in 1950. The beautiful garden visitors see today has evolved significantly from its early beginnings all those decades ago.
Sitting in the beautiful Yorkshire countryside, Harlow Carr is a delight in every season and showcases diverse landscapes with different garden styles and an extensive plant collection. The garden has expanded to cover more than 58 acres of garden to explore. If you can’t see it all in a day, why not become a member and enjoy as many free visits as you like.
Harlow Carr offers a variety of growing landscapes to provide inspiration for our visitors. From water features to woodland or wildflower meadows, from the lavish Main Borders, bursting with prairie-style planting, to the lush, moisture-loving plants around Streamside, there are planting ideas for all situations.
If you are an RHS member, don’t forget our experts are on hand at Harlow Carr to give you personalised advice and help you resolve your horticultural queries. Our friendly advisors and gardeners can also be found at our garden events, helping everyone get the best from their garden, however large or small.
The Harlow Carr Garden Centre is the perfect place to find top-quality plants, gifts and homeware, plus great ideas for the home and garden. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, our dedicated retail team will do their best to source it and reserve it for you when it’s available.
Not only do we offer a fantastic day out for walks and beautiful vistas to lift the spirits, we also stage events all year round – there is something for everyone. Our Harlow Carr Flower Show and spectacular Glow are just some of the experiences you won’t want to miss.
Since the Friends of Harlow Carr was founded, it has aimed to provide a focus of interest for RHS members and volunteers who would like more involvement with the garden. Any profits and proceeds generated from organised events and tours are then put towards funding garden projects at the garden.
