Introducing RHS Harlow Carr

A welcome message from our Curator, Paul Cook

A warm welcome to RHS Garden Harlow Carr here in North Yorkshire. The most northerly of all the RHS gardens, RHS Harlow Carr's location presents challenges and opportunities representative of the region.

The landscape here is diverse, with managed woodlands, streamside plantings, lavish and ornamental herbaceous borders, wildflower meadows and small-scale model gardens. Collectively they illustrate different garden styles, types of planting, methods of supporting wildlife, ideas for greening grey spaces, and strategies for mitigating the effects of extreme weather.

Our plant collection is extensive and continues to evolve as we push the boundaries of what we can grow. Blue poppies, primulas and rhododendrons all flourish in the cool, moist conditions along the beck and woodland edge, and they are now accompanied by new plantings incorporating Japanese iris, astilbe and hydrangea to increase seasonal interest.

Today, there are new challenges for gardeners, particularly around water management, and we are working to create garden features that help control the flow of water through the garden and at the same time illustrate the huge benefits for all of us if we each make small changes in our home gardens.

The team at RHS Harlow Carr, supported by its students and volunteers, develop and manage the planting diversity of 58 acres of land. We aim to provide our visitors with a fabulous day out in an environment that offers inspiration, thought-provoking ideas, stimulating planting schemes and restful places in which to be absorbed in nature. I hope you enjoy exploring these pages and that you come to visit us soon.
