The Bicentenary Arboretum

This area - home to some of Rosemoor’s best growing conditions - is a living reference of the northern hemisphere's finest trees.

Take a tree journey

Explore a rich collection of trees by their regions of origin: European and near-Eastern species along the eastern flank, southwest Asian specimens around the Gazebo, with Chinese and Japanese plants taking up the southern boundary. North American species are found along the western perimeter.

Creating a natural forest feel

Many of the major genera of temperate trees are represented in a rich array, including oaks, maples, pines, magnolias, cherries and dogwoods.

To achieve a naturalistic feel, we allow shrubs and herbaceous perennials to adopt their natural forms with minimal pruning. This creates layers of vegetation similar to what you would find in a forest environment.

An elegant eyecatcher

The Gazebo, an 18th century building, previously stood almost derelict in the grounds of Palmer House in Great Torrington.

Its restoration and move to Rosemoor has helped protect a piece of local heritage, and provides excellent views across the garden and local countryside.

Spring highlights

The Bicentenary Arboretum allows us to showcase some of the diversity of trees and shrubs from the northern hemisphere in broad geographical plantings from North America, Asia and Europe.  As these areas continue to mature, further elements of lower woody canopy and large drifts of herbaceous plants will be added to increase diversity and give interest from season to season.
