If you are a first-time owner of a garden or allotment and are not sure where to begin, this is the course for you. Designed for those looking to build their confidence, the day will introduce the key skills needed to care for and maintain a successful garden throughout the year.

Olive will demystify plant and soil types, pruning, lawn care, weed control, feeding and growing successfully in containers, helping you understand not only what to do, but why and when to do it. Drawing on her wealth of experience, she will provide practical advice and answer the questions that new gardeners ask most often.

The course will include an illustrated talk, a guided tour of the garden and a practical session in the greenhouse, giving you the opportunity to see techniques in action and put your new knowledge into practice.

Please note: There will be contact with compost, so covering cuts and scratches is advised.

Tutor: Olive Green
Olive has been teaching Horticulture, specialising in practical gardening, for 37 years and has been lecturing in horticulture at further education level for 26 years. She has also taught for the RHS at Harlow Carr Gardens for the past 10 years. Now retired, she is an active community member supporting a variety of projects.

Location: Bramall Learning Centre
Please arrive 15 minutes before the start of the workshop to allow time to register your arrival at the Main Entrance and make your way to the classroom.

Catering:
  • Tea and coffee will be available throughout.
  • Drinking water is available, and we suggest the use of a reusable water bottle.
  • You are welcome to bring your own lunch or purchase food and drinks from RHS Harrogate Arms or Bettys. Both are just a short walk away, but can be busy at lunchtime, so you may wish to purchase food before the course begins. Full details can be found here.
