What I love most about my job is the satisfaction of knowing that I’ve inspired or helped a visitor to better understand their garden
I knew I wanted to study and work with plants as early as secondary school, and it was a work experience placement leading to a Saturday job that really got me into the industry. Until then I didn’t realise you could study Horticulture at university but I knew immediately it was for me. I graduated from Writtle College in 2013 with first class honours and after a six month traineeship at a historic garden, joined the Plant Centre at Harlow Carr as a Horticultural Assistant. Key aspects of my role include liaising with suppliers and growers to maintain our stock levels, helping customers and keeping the plants in tip-top condition, and with responsibility for several departments including Shrubs, Climbers and Alpines, there’s never a dull moment. What I love most about my job is the satisfaction of knowing that I’ve inspired or helped a visitor to better understand their garden, whether recommending plants, identifying a pest or disease or giving some plant care advice. Working outside in such a beautiful setting is just the cherry-on-top!
