Painting Autumn treasures is all about browns, neutral, golden tones, and bright berry colours. These are one of the most beautiful subjects to paint!

During this three-day workshop, you will create either a composed sheet of seedheads and other autumn treasures, or choose a single striking subject to portray. Using a more limited palette of colours, you will be guided and encouraged to practice mixing the beautiful autumn hues you will need rather than using ready-mixed pigments.

You will learn to make an accurate detailed drawing as a composition or a single striking subject. Jackie will demonstrate how to mix colours with the limited palette and help with composition and application techniques throughout the workshop. You will learn how to render blemishes, apply fine detailing and achieve good depth of colour. Subjects will be collected from the gardens during the year, and you will also learn a little detail about the seed dispersal methods of plants, helping you to make sense of the mechanism and detail of the subjects that you draw.

Jackie has taught this workshop a few times and it has been very well received. She is an RHS Gold Medal winner and studied basic botany alongside botanist Liz Leech to complete her exhibition entry, realising how important this is for botanical artists. Jackie is self-taught and have been teaching for 8 years.

Please bring with you:
  • Your booking reference number
  • A notebook and pencil to make notes
  • Your own drawing and painting kit: watercolour paints and paintbrushes including a mixing brush (suggested mixing brush, Cotman One Stroke 666 series 1/8inch), good quality hot pressed watercolour paper in white, cartridge paper for initial sketching, H pencil, pencil sharpener and eraser. 
  • Suggested pigments Winsor & Newton: Winsor Violet, Indanthrene Blue, Winsor Blue Red Shade, Winsor Blue Green Shade, Transparent Yellow, Indian Yellow, Permanent Rose, Quinacridone Red.
