A showcase of native plants

The tranquil lake has been planted with more than 3,000 aquatic and marginal specimens, spread over 31 different species of native plant.

It is hoped that Moon Bridge Water will fulfil Natural England’s Biodiversity Action Plan criteria for ‘Ponds’ and support an exceptional population or number of key pond species including:

  • More than 30 species of native plants
  • An exceptional community of dragonflies and amphibians
  • More than 50 aquatic macro-invertebrate species.

Lakeside planting provides all year interest and homes for wildlife

Ecological vision

Time and patience will be needed to realise the ecological vision for Moon Bridge Water, but the aesthetic and landscape values of this magnificent, new body of water are already in place. The quality and impact of this vision will increase with each successive year of growth and maturity.

A symbol of collaboration

The creation of the lake was generously funded by Dr Lee Kai Hung and the new lake’s name has been chosen from a shortlist of options provided by The China Flower Association.

The name signifies the collaboration between RHS Garden Bridgewater and Yangzhou City (also known as the ‘Moon City’), itself a symbol of the cultural exchange and friendship between the people of the UK and China. Moon bridges are iconic elements of many classical Chinese garden designs – in fact, the Chinese Streamside Garden, which flows into Moon Bridge Water, will be home to Bridgewater’s own moon bridge.

“The inspiration for the name, Moon Bridge Water, comes from the famous poem “Moonlight Over the Twenty Fourth Bridge” by Du Mu, a poet of the Tang Dynasty.”

Mr Gerry Yeung OBE DL, member of the Chinese Streamside Garden Founding Committee
