About the Garden

Celebrating the centenary of the formation of the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1918 and commemorating the ending of World War I, this geometric garden is enclosed by tall hedging. It’s entered through one of four gates sited at each corner. Elliptical pathways extend into the garden from the gates and cross at the central seating area – in doing so, they form a shape suggesting the outline of aircraft propellers. Sculptural steel panels and herbaceous planting in red, white and blue represent the heritage of the RAF.

Precise and clipped hedging creates a sense of enclosure and topiary balls symbolise radar while birch trees allude to the early plywood airframes.
