RHS Hilltop – The Home of Gardening Science cost £35 million and was the largest ever investment in horticultural science

A greener future

RHS Hilltop – The Home of Gardening Science is our new centre of horticultural excellence, a place for us to inspire the next generation of scientists and officially opened on 24 June 2021.

Step inside this stunning space to see our research being carried out, learn about the invaluable work of the RHS with our interactive displays, marvel at our world-class collections and enjoy a bite to eat at a cafe where the produce is fresh from the gardens outside.

And if that isn’t enough, you can enjoy unparalled, panaromic views across our flagship garden while enjoying a drink on the Sky Terrace.

Glorious new gardens

Encompassing RHS Hilltop are three gardens brimming with ideas that reflect the latest research for people to take away and incorporate at home, in schools and in communities.

Wellbeing Garden

Designed by Matt Keightley this garden draws visitors up to RHS Hilltop. Walk amongst drifts of dwarf pine, amble along the water rill and rest awhile in a ‘garden room’ or take in the view from a grassed terrace. Everything in this garden provides inspiration to get people gardening for body and soul.

World Food Garden

Taking its inspiration from a traditional kitchen garden but with a contemporary twist, this new space will delight chefs and gardeners alike. Take a tour through the world food maze with exotic and lesser known foods, be inspired in the good to grow section before sitting down in the café and edible flowers area to enjoy the demonstration kitchen.

Wildlife Garden

RHS Garden Wisley’s first dedicated Wildlife Garden is abuzz with inspiration. Designed by RHS Chelsea Gold medal winner Ann-Marie Powell, this is not a nature reserve but demonstrates the perfect way to create a wildlife haven in our own gardens. It also includes RHS Wisley’s most extensive water planting scheme.

The large atrium in RHS Hilltop will provide the perfect space to showcase our work

Visitor experience

The spacious atrium at RHS Hilltop is host to a permanent exhibition that demonstrates the benefits of gardens for wellbeing and gives tips for creating garden spaces that improve the natural environment in a changing climate.

Dramatic showcase displays and interactive exhibits feature the best of our research and world-class collections.

Visitors will see our herbarium specialists at work preparing specimens and have the chance to take a behind-the-scenes tour into our collections and scientific laboratories.

Opening up our collections

More of our rich collection of botanical art, horticultural books and records are available to the public, now that RHS Wisley’s library, archives and the herbarium are housed in one place.

The purpose-built space will preserve these precious resources, which date back hundreds of years, for future generations to learn from the most complete record of the UK’s horticultural heritage.

Everyone is welome to browse the library collections and members can borrow books from the lending library.

Preserving plant specimens

The RHS Herbarium holds the UK’s largest collection of cultivated plants, with more than 86,000 dried plant specimens.

These unique specimens were being stored in cramped conditions. They are now in our state-of-the-art Herbarium, a controlled environment where temperature and light are strictly regulated.

The new digitisation suite allows us to share our nationally important collection online with everyone who wishes to see the samples.

Research laboratories

We have always had horticultural science at the heart of our work and today this is more important than ever before.

RHS Hilltop, previously known as the Centre for Horticultural Science and Learning, houses three research laboratories, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for collaborative research which will advance our work years ahead of what was achieveable in the old Laboratory.

The building is now home to a team of about 70 advisors, scientists and PhD students, all focusing on finding solutions to the key environmental challenges gardeners face.

Meet the team

Living laboratories

RHS scientists have already shown how garden plants can capture pollution, reduce flood damage, and assist in the cooling of cities as our climate warms. Now research is urgently needed to help save pollinators, identify and manage pests and diseases, and increase plant biodiversity.

We have also shown the importance of gardening to health and wellbeing and the new gardens surrounding the RHS Hilltop building will be used as a living laboratory. Upcoming research includes investigating if scent provokes an emotional response.

Teaching and learning

RHS Hilltop has two accessible learning studios and a teaching garden, increasing the number of people we can talk to about plants every year. Students will meet our scientists and horticulturists face-to-face and get valuable advice about all things plant related.

We will also train the botanists, plant health scientists, and environmental scientists of the future, getting them started on the next step of their horticultural career.

Sustainably built

Like all of our new builds, RHS Hilltop exploits the very latest in environmentally friendly techniques from installing our own renewable energy sources to very high levels of insulation. During construction an astonishing 99% of waste generated was recycled.

As part of the wider development, rainwater capture will reduce our dependency on tap water while also reducing the risk of flooding during heavy downpours.

But we aim to be as socially responsible as possible. Our contractors are part of the Considerate Constructor Programme, which means they give back to the community, and we continue working to make the gardens accessible to all.

National Lottery Heritage Fund

The National Lottery Heritage Fund awarded £4 million to support the transformation at RHS Wisley, with more than half going towards RHS Hilltop. This grant will also help fund inspirational activity programmes to further knowledge and skills, and widen engagement.

Together with a significant contribution from the RHS, we’re asking for your help to complete our funding and ensure that together we build a greener future for our country, planet and the next generation.
