Join Yan Wang Preston,
RHS Garden Bridgewater’s artist in residence and globally renowned photographer, to learn how to take stunning portraits in the garden setting.
The workshop will start by reviewing some iconic portraits in gardens, before stepping out into the garden on a guided walk with the goal of finding the perfect spots for a portrait. This workshop will focus on the skills of composing a portrait photograph, the importance of connection between the photographer, the sitter and the garden, and how photographer’s instructions can lead to capturing a natural and meaningful portrait in the garden. Yan will share experiences in directing the body positions and facial expressions subtly, as well as in paying attention to the colours and texture of the garden for a successful photograph.
The workshop will conclude in the learning studio, with time to review the portraits taken by the workshop participants. Each attendee will leave the workshop with guided, well composed photographs of their sitter, and receive photographs with themselves as the sitter following the workshop.
Attendees will be working in pairs. Participants will be expected to not only take photographs, but be the portrait subject (sitter) in the workshop for others. With this in mind, this is a great opportunity to learn skills of portrait photography with friends and family, or individuals looking to enhance their skills. The workshop is suitable for beginners as well as confident photographers.
All attendees are required to bring a DSLR camera, or alternatively, a good camera phone. On arrival, participants will be required to sign an agreement to not publicly share photographs taken in the workshop without the permission of their sitters.
