Reimagining the borders

A section of borders within the Weston Walled Garden and close to Community Grow at RHS Bridgewater, Greater Manchester, are set to undergo a dramatic transformation in 2025. Following the themes of the natural elements: air, water, earth, and fire, the redevelopment of the borders into the Elemental Borders will be a major new horticultural feature at the garden.

Playing a vital link in the garden

The Air section of the Elemental Borders will be the first to be completed in early 2025 and will see a new birch treescape with a light canopy creating dappled shade beneath. The other elemental areas on the theme of water, earth and fire will be completed as funds are raised to support this.

The borders will also play a central role in the garden’s community, wellbeing, and education offering as they link the Peel Learning Garden, Community Grow, and Community Wellbeing, which schools and community groups use throughout the year.

“Our extensive borders will provide a colourful and dynamic walkway through the outer Walled Garden linking the horticultural offering together. We’re very excited by this project’s innovative use of the space and all the new plantings we will be able to introduce over the next few years.”

Marcus Chilton-Jones, Curator at RHS Garden Bridgewater
