Meet the designer of Cha No Niwa – Japanese Tea Garden in the Show category at RHS Chelsea 2025
Kazuyuki Ishihara
Kazuyuki Ishihara was born in Nagasaki-city. After he graduated from university, he started studying the ‘Ikenobo’ style of Ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement with a long tradition), and his eyes were opened to the world of flowers. When he was 29, he started selling flowers on the street, inspired by the flower shops of Paris. Through floristry, he built up his artistic talent. In 1995 he launched his own company, Kazahana Co. Ltd. Today, Kazuyuki continues to create beautiful Japanese landscapes all over the country and his design and construction skills are recognised worldwide.

Ishigara says:
“Forty-five years ago, when I first practiced Ikebana, I was deeply moved by the world of forms created with just three branches. Since then, my designstyle has been about recreating those unforgettable, nostalgic landscapes that people around the world have seen at some point in their lives, within a garden.
“I’ve created this garden in my hometown. I have a desire to revitalise this depopulated town by turning it into a tourist destination and passing it on to the next generation. I use the same trees year after year, but their expression is always different.”
