Plants in the Komorebi Garden

Betula pendula creates a Komorebi effect of light and shadow, the planting follows the principles of ‘right plant, right place’

“Stark white trunks against a dark background brings the concept to life, reminiscent of the forests visited by the designer as a child. Using different size specimens will enhance this, with the taller ones providing ‘komorebi’ light and shadow when the sun passes through the canopy.”

Disporum longistylum ‘Night Heron’ – long-styled disporum

“Long stalks give a sense of hight and depth, and black emerging stems compliment dark landscape materials, and are reminiscent of growing bamboo.”

Sought after by the designers, these elegant shade-loving perennials have attractive foliage, which emerges in spring with a bronze flush before turning rich green. Then, in late spring or early summer, pendent tubular flowers appear, which vary in colour from creamy white to purplish-red, and these are followed by deepest crimson berries.

“Most of the time, people focus on flowers but I’d like to celebrate different shapes of leaves, for instance, Polygonatum and Disporum have a wide variety of forms and sizes to suit different situations.”

“Arching more horizontally with a finer leaf than the Disporum, the two are paired to play on the form and bring visual interest.”

A rhizomatous perennial with erect stems, bearing lance-shaped, stalkless leaves, mainly in whirls, sometimes opposite. Bearing pendant tubular, greenish white flowers in the leaf axils, from late spring to mid-summer and followed by small, red berries.

Farfugium japonicum – leopard plant

“Deep green shinny round leaves provide a lush verdant and moist forest feel.”

A slightly tender clump-forming evergreen perennial, with large, slightly fleshy, glossy rich green, kidney-shaped leaves. Branched clusters of daisy-like bright yellow flowers are borne in late autumn and early winter.

“Small and versatile, pairing with Farfugium the similar form is a play on size and scale.”

A creeping, evergreen perennial forming carpets of kidney-shaped, glossy, dark green leaves. The green, then purple, flowers are hidden under the foliage.

Plant lists are provided by the designer of the garden as a guide to the plants they hope to use in the garden based on the time of year, the location and the Client Brief. The plants that feature at the Show depends on a variety of factors such as weather during the growing season and availability. While the designers try to update lists where possible, the accuracy of the list cannot be guaranteed.
