Immersive planting

Planted in 2009, Birch Grove features five species of birch from Asia and North America: Betula albosinensis ‘Fascination’, B. alleghaniensis, B. ermanii, B. lenta and B. nigra.

The recent addition of winding woodland paths allows visitors to meander through the trees and feel fully immersed in the planting.

A continuity of colour

Birch Grove is an impressive sight in late spring, when masses of white and pink foxgloves (Digitalis purpurea) grow among the trees. In autumn, the birches' airy foliage turns to shades of rich yellow and brown, and in winter, their beautiful white and coloured ornamental bark can be fully appreciated.

Around the bases of the trees, groupings of Epimedium and grasses create the impression of a long-established woodland. Other species, such as Cornus (from the Winter Garden), have been woven through the grove, to provide a sense of continuity through the garden. Pinus sylvestris with its copper-coloured bark and stately shape help this transition.

Beyond the garden

From Birch Grove, visitors can head towards Clover Hill and the Australia and New Zealand Garden, or take the path right to the children’s play area and Winter Garden.
