A Wreath of evergreens has long been associated with Midwinter festivals and the marking of the Winter solstice. In the Northern Hemisphere the sun sets at its lowest point and the day is the shortest of the year. It is thought that evergreen leaves were woven or twisted into a band in the shape of the sun to symbolise the eternal nature of the cycle of life and celebrate the sun’s return.

This RHS Garden Bridgewater trail is an interpretation of the wreath using materials and techniques associated with ancient cultures that celebrated and marked the solstice. There are 7 different sculpture points to be found around the garden.
