The mint family stars in a range of feature borders at RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival (1–6 July 2025) with seven designs by horticultural students celebrating over 7,000 species of these well-known sensory plants.

Following the success of last year’s beautiful All About Asteraceae borders, budding designers from the London College of Garden Design entered a competition to be part of the Festival, with a brief to create a planting scheme that showcases the diversity and versatility of the Lamiaceae family.

For the Love of Lamiaceae beds celebrate the mint family

Last year’s All About Asteraceae beds designed by graduates of the London College of Garden Design were a big hit at RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival. This year the budding horticulturists are back, taking on the challenge of creating a range of individual beds from a palate of the more than 7,000 species of the mint family.

The herb bed would be a desolate place without Lamiaceae. Not only would there be no mint to whip up into a mojito, but also no oregano or basil to throw on a pizza, no lavender to make soothing balms, and no sage, rosemary or thyme for Simon & Garfunckel to sing about.

Find out how to welcome this fragrant family into your garden at RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival 2025.

Children’s groups are invited to design and plant an up-cycled oil drum at RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival 2025.

The theme for this year is Wonderland, a place that is full of exciting, interesting and wonderful things. We are looking for entries that are playful, creative and stimulate curiosity

Entries will not be formally judged but they are encouraged to be horticulturally correct. For example, if you design your barrel for pollinators, think carefully about the type/s of wildlife you want to support as this will help you to choose which plants to use.

Entries are welcome from all schools and youth groups (up to 16 years) from London, Surrey and the surrounding area.
