Meet the designers of the University of Sheffield: Beautifully Stressed Garden Resilient Planting Pocket at RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival 2024
Xun Xie, Jingwen Liu, Awika Butnark, Andrew McMaster
Xun Xie says: “My interest in biology classes in high school inspired me to work
in the horticultural industry. I haven‘t found the style that suits me best, but I
feel it should use natural materials and emphasize the expression of plants.
I hope to apply the naturalistic planting I learned in the UK to gardens with
the characteristics and wisdom of Chinese gardens in the future.”
Jingwen Liu says: “I think what inspired me to work in horticulture is because I
love spending time with plants, it makes me feel at ease and also my grandfather loved growing plants, he taught me so much and I love that feeling. For me gardening is not just a career, it‘s a way for me to learn how to be alone and spend time with my family.”
Awika Butnark says: The transforming power of gardens and the beauty of
nature are sources of inspiration for me. As a landscape architect, my style
is outstanding with a harmonious blend of elements that enhance the
natural landscape while creating functional and visually appealing outdoor
spaces. My top priorities are biodiversity, sustainability, and providing users
with distinctive experiences.”
Andrew McMaster says: “Horticulture is a way for me to understand natural
processes of plants and connect to the rhythms of seasonal change. As a
child I never found my place in the classroom and so from a young age I
knew I wanted a hands on career in the outdoors.”
