Sam says: “Being involved in the show is a chance to broadcast a really important ecological message about water conservation that’s close to my heart. It’s also a wonderful chance to meet your peers and push your design skills to the limits.”
Sam’s tips to designing a container garden:
- Be bold - don’t be afraid of using the biggest planters you can find, as they will allow you to grow a complementary range of plants with contrasting foliage and flower shapes.
- Keep it simple - Make the plants the stars rather than the pots themselves, which play a supporting role. Try to keep them all in a similar colour or tone, so they don’t compete with each other and the planting.
- Create for the long term - rather than simply planting with annuals which get thrown away at the end of the season, consider using structural plants like shrubs, underplanted with ferns, bulbs and perennials, which will give you years of pleasure and interest, as well as a changing palette through the seasons.
