It Doesn’t Have to Cost the Earth

Show Gardens

Like real gardens in many housing developments around the UK, the garden explores the need to reinstate habitats for wildlife, impacted by property construction.

Deep pigments and earthy tones of the planting echo the contemporary and reclaimed materials used in the garden, and inspired by nature. These muted shades are interspersed with vibrant colour to encourage birds and insects to visit the garden.

At a glance:

Who is this garden for?
A professional couple, who are garden enthusiasts with an interesting and varied plant collection, who are creating a relaxing environment to adjoin their recently purchased new-build property.
Where is the garden set?
Anywhere in the UK.
Who or what is the design inspiration?
Beautiful recycled and innovative sustainable materials, coupled with atmospheric interesting planting consisting of both native and unusual species.

The garden features a central Corten steel helix sculpture, used as a pergola, to congregate, sit and enjoy the garden, and as an artwork in itself.

The innovation of the design continues below ground, in the construction methods and materials used, with conservation in mind. Created with minimal disruption to the earth, the design focuses on soil health and building biodiversity to help grow a healthy strong garden and enhance nature.

Key sustainability points:

  • The stone is sustainably sourced and manufactured within the UK. Waste products and offcuts from the production processes of larger items will be used for the paved area in the form of British stone setts
  • Stone will be stack bonded, to minimise cutting and any waste is interspersed with the planting.
  • Path gravels are waste from production of the manufacturers stone walling products and will be used throughout
  • All materials will be coming from the same small production facility to minimise transportation.
  • An innovative recycled foam glass product is used as a sub-base, in place of traditionally quarried aggregates
