Twining climbers for shade

Many plants climb with the help of twining stems, leaf stalks or tendrils. Some will need help to attach to supports while others may not need tying in and will climb unaided. Use supports such as trellis or horizontal wires or tie stems in to cover a shady pergola, wooden or metal frame.

The following twining climbers are some of the best for a shady wall.

Practical tips

Make sure of the height of your climber so you can give it a good size support structure

Compact climbers under 10m (33ft)

For small walls or fences the following climbers will provide cover without overwhelming there alloted space.

Vigorous climbers over 10m (33ft)

Some large climbers can quickly fill an empty space, even in shade. The following will romp away in most reasonable garden soils.
