Objectives and purpose of the trial

The focus of this trial is to assess a range of late, maincrop carrot (Daucus carota) cultivars (excluding nantes and amsterdam types). The RHS Trials team at RHS Wisley, Surrey, aims to compare, record and display the merits of new and established maincrop carrot cultivars for garden use and cultivation. Those that perform best will be awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM).

Judges and criteria

Judging criteria

The following factors are all taken into consideration as part of the judging of the trial:

  • Top size
  • Flesh and core colour
  • Lack of internal greening and cavity spot
  • Taste

  • Skin smoothness
  • Shape
  • Uniformity of root
