Cabbages (winter) trial 2024–2025

Objectives and purpose of the trial

The focus of this trial is to assess a range of winter cabbages, Brassica oleracea (from the family Brassicaceae that includes cabbages). This is a dual trial at RHS Bridgewater, Greater Manchester and RHS Rosemoor, Devon. The last time the RHS trialled cabbages was in 2009, at RHS Wisley, Surrey. The RHS Trials team aims to compare, record and show the merits of new and established cabbage cultivars, those that perform best will be awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM).

Judging criteria

The following factors are all taken into consideration as part of the judging of the trial:

  • Yield
  • Colour
  • Shape and uniformity

  • Weight and density of head
  • Resistance to pests and diseases
