Baptisia trial 2024–2026

Objectives and purpose of the trial

The focus of this trial is to showcase a range of Baptisia (wild indigo or false indigo) species and cultivars available to gardeners. The trial at RHS Wisley, Surrey, will compare, record and display the merits of new editions against established cultivars, as well as identify the correct nomenclature for the species and cultivars in the trial. Those that perform best will be awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM).

Judging criteria

The following factors are all taken into consideration as part of the judging of the trial:

  • Quality of flowers
  • Number of flower stems
  • Length of flowering
  • Quality of foliage

  • Overall appearance of plant
  • Quality of seedheads
