Choosing stipa by size

The feathery or oat-like flowerheads of stipas add texture and movement to sunny borders. Choose from delicate whispy grasses just 60cm (2ft) high to bold clumps with dramatic plumes standing over 2m (6½ft) tall.

Stipa over 2m (6½ft) tall

These tall grasses make bold evergreen clumps, ideal as stand-alone specimens or mixed with other grasses, shrubs and large perennials. Their oat-like seedheads stand tall through summer, autumn and into winter, glowing golden in the sun.

Stipa from 1–2m (3¼–6½ft) tall

These stipas work well in the middle or back of borders and in praire-style plantings. They bring movement to a garden, billowing and swaying in the breeze.

Stipas less than 1m (3¼ft) tall

These deciduous stipas can be woven through borders, mingling with flowering perennials and other grasses, or grown in containers.
