Many rudbeckias are herbaceous perennials, flowering in summer and then dying back to the ground in winter. These are useful for providing a blaze of yellow from late summer into autumn.
Most cultivars of the short-lived herbaceous perennial R. hirta are grown as annuals for a summer of colour in the UK. Available in shades of yellow, orange, dark red or brown, they are ideal for summer bedding, cut flowers, containers and for filling gaps at the front of borders. They can be bought as seeds and raised in spring, although they are sometimes available as small plants in May.
