Pittosporum by leaf

Practical tips

Pittosporum tobira needs the shelter of a frost-free greenhouse or conservatory in winter, unless you live in a big city or have a coastal garden in the UK. All the others listed here will grow outside all year, except in the coldest areas of Scotland and northern England.

Pittosporum with glossy, single-colour leaves

Not all pittosporums have markings or contrasting margins to the leaves, instead their dense glossy foliage is a single colour. These make useful background evergreens, ideal as a foil to highlight other plants in your border.

Pittosporum with variegated leaves

Grow variegated cultivars in a sunny spot to ensure the colour of the contrasting leaf margins develops well.
