Plant societies are full of friendly enthusiasts who are keen to share their enjoyment and knowledge of their favourite plants
There are plant societies for almost every plant group you can think of, so whether you love plants for shade, sun, drought, or just have a favourite plant that you can’t live without, there will be a plant society waiting to welcome you with open arms.
These societies play an important role serious business of improving the understanding, cultivation and conservation of a huge range of plants. Many have websites that offer advice, information and photo collections, as well as members’ areas.
A plant society will give its members, whether amateur or professional, the opportunity to meet each other and share experiences and stories, as well as taking part in the fantastic range of activities available. Each society offers their own members' package, but among these you may be able to:
- Visit collections and gardens not usually open to the public
- Gain access to new and unusual varieties through seed- and plant-sharing schemes
- Meet members in your area through local branches
- Take part in shows and competitions
- Receive annual publications and yearbooks
- Access to expert advice and information
- Attend talks and demonstrations about your favourite plants
- Access members’ areas of websites – where you can ask advice and take part in society events
To be able to continue providing all this fabulous information, and take part in shows like this our plant societies need members. So why not think about joining the one that represents your favourite plant? The websites will give you all the details needed for joining and tell you more about each society.
RHS and Plant Society Events
The RHS currently works with more than 40 plant societies, giving everybody the opportunity to take part in plant shows, special events and workshops.
Many of these plant societies hold shows and exhibitions at one or more of the RHS Gardens. These provide the society with the opportunity to hold competitions, promote displays of plants and photographs, showcase unusual or new species, sell plants, provide workshops and demonstrations and promote their society to visitors.
