Echium by hardiness

There are over 60 species of Echium that grow across much of Europe, particularly the Mediterranean area, the Macaronesian islands, parts of Asia, and north Africa. The areas they are native to determine what conditions they require to grow well in the UK. Minimum temperatures are an important factor but keeping the plants on the dry side during the winter will also help them survive.

Hardy throughout most of the UK

These Echium are hardy enough to grow outside throughout most of the UK, provided they are grown on a free draining soil.

Can be grown outside in milder areas of the UK

On a free draining soil these Echium can be grown outside in milder areas of the UK.  In colder areas they could be grown in the ground outside but may need winter protection.

Tender Echium

These Echium are best grown indoors all year round, or grown in pots that can be put outside during the summer months but kept warm and dry undercover in autumn, winter and spring.
