Asters for containers

Many asters perform well in containers. Low growing, bushy types look good on their own or taller ones as a centrepiece surrounded by earlier summer flowering plants.

There are short cultivars of Symphyotrichum novi-belgii (Michaelmas daisies) that have a mound forming habit; these look good in containers but can be prone to the fungal problem powdery mildew if they suffer drought stress. Keeping the compost slightly moist through summer will help reduce any issues.
