Alocasia
Botanical name: Alocasia
Common name: Giant taro, elephant’s ears
Alocasias are attractive foliage houseplants, ideal for creating a tropical look. Their leaves are often large, glossy and eye-catching, with the veins making bold patterns.
Looks
The large leaves can be green, purple or silver and heart-shaped or arrow-shaped, often with prominent veins. Some species can grow very large, up to 1.5m (5ft) tall, but there are plenty of smaller and still very striking options too.
Likes
Alocasias need bright but indirect light, temperatures of 16–30°C (60–85°F) and humid air from spring to autumn. Keep them cooler and drier in winter when they’re dormant.
Dislikes
Alocasias dislike cool temperatures (below 16°C/60°F) and draughts. Direct sun in summer can burn the foliage. In winter, when dormant, they need very little water and no feeding.
Did you know?
Alocasias contain calcium oxalate crystals, which are toxic and can cause severe pain and swelling, so wear gloves when handling and keep plants away from children and pets.
