A large, evergreen conifer reaching a height of 15-20m with thick, stiff, deep green needles, radially arranged, 15-20mm long and whitish underneath. The seed-cones are barrel-shaped, 15-20cm tall x 4-6cm wide, light green with a purplish tinge in late spring, maturing light purplish brown
