A spreading, semi-evergreen shrub or small tree to 4m tall and 6m wide. Oblong to elliptic leaves up to 8cm long are semi-evergreen with some turning shades of yellow, orange and reddish-purple before falling in autumn; new growth emerges tinted deep reddish-purple in spring before turning glossy green. In late winter to early spring, dense clusters of flowers open from brown buds with yellow anthers tinged red surrounded by purple-brown bracts
