A wide-spreading deciduous shrub to 3m in height. Stout, glossy green branchlets, become glossy dark brown in their second year, and winter buds are bright red. Large, elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate leaves, to 18cm long, 3.5-8cm wide, glossy dark green above with impressed veins; dull green below. Slender, erect catkins to 12cm long (males) or 18cm (females) are produced in spring
