Steve’s friendship story

Steve and Christine at the Britain in Bloom UK Finals 2024

Steve Brook is Chairman of Bath in Bloom. Steve met his wife Christine through community gardening. Here he tells us about this shared passion and why he’d encourage anyone to give it a go.

I’ve been Chairman of Bath in Bloom for the last four years and have been on the committee for 12. I entered my garden in the local Bath in Bloom competition for a couple of years and in 2012 was invited to the awards ceremony. I asked Christine (who I had just met at our local gardening club) along as my guest. This was our first date, so I hoped it would go well.

At the ceremony, I won Gold for my garden (a good start), and then later that evening, to my complete surprise, I was named Overall Bath in Bloom Champion for 2012 and was presented with a very large trophy. Christine and I had decided to go for dinner afterwards, but, not expecting to win a trophy, I had nothing to carry it in, so walked through the streets of Bath carrying it openly, as if it was quite normal! It also looked a little strange sitting on the restaurant table and got a few odd glances from the other diners. It was a good talking point, nevertheless. I hoped Christine was impressed. Three years later we were married, and this year celebrated our ninth wedding anniversary.

Following this success, I was invited to join the Bath in Bloom committee and Christine and I were also asked to join the committee of our gardening club. This is when my horticultural volunteering work began. Christine had been doing some for several years at a local church and care home. A few years ago, Christine also became a Bath in Bloom committee member.

Christine is an excellent plantswoman and is good at propagation, planting, and enjoys weeding, whereas I hate weeding, but enjoy planting, design, and the ‘bigger’ jobs.

One of the spaces that Bath in Bloom volunteers look after

We do a lot of community gardening now in Bath. We are particularly proud of the two large community perennial gardens we have helped create in the city centre and a roundabout near where we live. They are all on very busy main roads, so they are enjoyed by many thousands of people every day.

The reason we enjoy volunteer community gardening so much, apart from it being a passion, is that we meet new people with a shared interest. We have met hundreds of people, many of whom have now become good friends, through Bath in Bloom, local RHS It’s Your Neighbourhood groups, Bath BID, volunteer gardening at the local hospital, and our local gardening club.

Volunteering also helps keep us fit and we love being outside in the fresh air, making improvements to our local communities and the environment. I would urge anyone interested to get involved. You can devote as much or as little time as you can spare. It all makes a big difference.

A few months ago, I was working on one of the large community flower beds in the centre of Bath, when a lady stopped to chat. She said, “I want to thank you for all the work you do. I love these flowerbeds. I walk past them almost every day and they always bring a smile to my face.” That for me sums up why I do what I do. We really do make a difference.

Bath in Bloom was crowned Overall Winner of the 2024 Britain in Bloom UK Finals. Find out how this community gardening group has been making a difference.
