About the garden
A visit to Holkham is incomplete without stepping through the Venetian gates into the enchanting Walled Garden, a serene space dating back to the late 1700s. Originally laid out by Samuel Wyatt, this six-acre garden is undergoing an exciting rejuvenation project. Divided into themed squares and slips, the garden features Georgian and Victorian greenhouses, an ornamental garden, an established vineyard, a productive kitchen garden supplying fresh produce, an exotic garden, and a beautiful cutting garden filled with colourful blooms.
The garden aims to emphasise its sustainable practices, using nature to manage problem areas while improving the soil with cover crops and supporting pollinators with wildflowers. Within the historic Samuel Wyatt Vinery, the stories from the Walled Garden exhibition provide an engaging glimpse into the garden’s history, architecture, and the people who have tended it over the years. Visitors can relax on a sofa to watch a film created by the Walled Garden team, offering an insightful and personal look at this evolving garden.
