About the garden
The tranquil gardens at Chawton House offer a journey through garden design history, featuring an 18th-century Wilderness, a 19th-century Walled Garden, and 20th-century terraces, including one designed by a young Edwin Lutyens. Throughout the year, the gardens come to life with spectacular displays, from carpets of snowdrops and daffodils in early spring to bluebells and blossoms in May. In summer, herbaceous borders, roses, and vibrant kitchen and herbal gardens flourish, while autumn brings a burst of apple harvests and rich colours. The gardens are further enhanced by seasonal trails, family activities, and events, making them a year-round delight.
Chawton House, closely linked to Jane Austen, is not only a historical landmark but also a hub for celebrating women writers, with the UK’s only collection of pre-20th-century women’s writing. The gardens themselves echo the contributions of early botanists and horticulturists. The house, once owned by Jane Austen’s brother, was a significant influence on her writing, and visitors can explore the estate, including Austen-related exhibits. The site also nurtures new creative and horticultural talent, with changing exhibitions and a gift shop. After enjoying the gardens, visitors can relax with homemade cakes and drinks at the Old Kitchen and Courtyard or take a peaceful walk in the surrounding parkland and Mingledown woodland.
