About the garden
This garden, a delight for all seasons with its rare and unusual plant collections, is set around a romantic house and partial ruins. The comfortable yet elegant house reflects the personalities and stories of the Messel family. In spring, enjoy blossoms, bulbs and a stunning collection of lightly fragranced magnolias. Dramatic displays of vibrant native tree colours in autumn precede winter’s structural form, with pockets of perfumed daphne throughout the garden.
Highlights include hidden corners through stone archways, tree-lined avenues surrounded by the lush Sussex Weald countryside and the Rose Garden, inspired by Maud Messel’s 1920s design. Collections of camellias, cornus, dahlias, grasses, heathers, magnolias and chilean can be found in the Wall Garden. The adjoining woodland, wildflower meadows, streams and lake offer opportunities to spot wildlife.
