About the garden
This stunning garden is located at the home of 18th-century naturalist Gilbert White, author of the nature-writing classic The Natural History of Selborne. Gilbert White’s House and Gardens spans 30 acres and features a formal garden, orchards, a kitchen garden, an herb garden, a naturalist's garden with a wildlife pond and wildflower meadows.
Gilbert designed his garden in the style of the English Landscape Movement, with planting inspired by his gardening journals, the Garden Kalendar. The Naturalist’s Garden reflects the flora of the surrounding area and has recently been redesigned and replanted using his Flora Selborniensis of 1766. Beehives wee also introduced to support pollination and produce honey available for purchase in the shop.
The team is dedicated to managing the garden sustainably, using no pesticides or herbicides and traditional methods, such as scything.
