About the garden

Owned by

Mary Benger

East Devon’s secret garden is a secret no more! Voted The Nation's Favourite Public Garden in 2021, the gardens are set in 13 beautifully secluded acres with many unusual trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants. A thatched stone summerhouse looks towards a lake and ancient oak woodland is underplanted with rhododendrons, azaleas and other woodland plants. Azaleas flourish in the garden and the Azalea Glade is a particularly tranquil and enchanted area of the garden.

The more formal Millennium garden features colour-themed planting with a rill running through the centre into a formal pond. The Grasses Garden (created in 2010 to celebrate 50 years since the garden started) features ornamental grasses waving gently above the sunken path. A profusion of perennials creates a lovely display of colour with pink, blue and purple as the theme, and a walk through the wildflower meadow will take visitors to extensive views of rolling Devon hills.

The garden is carefully designed to provide interest year round with early spring interest right through to superb autumn colour. Once you have walked around the garden you can enjoy a light lunch or Devon cream tea in the picturesque tea room. There is also an extensive nursery featuring many of the plants in the garden and a gift shop, as well as a fantastic range of locally made Garden Ironwork for sale as well.
