About the garden

Outside the world of gardening, not many people are familiar with the name Gertrude Jekyll, but for those with green fingers, and others in the know, she is one of the most influential English horticulturists and garden designers, as well as being an artist and writer. The years she spent replanting the gardens at Tylney Hall represent a lifetime’s achievement. So it is of little surprise that the owners put just as much loving care into restoring the gardens and bringing the hall back to its former glory.

The head gardener, Paul Tattersdill, and his dedicated team have been tending the gardens for more than 30 years, with his vision only now nearing completion. At the last count, there were more than 250,000 trees and shrubs on the estate, which sprawls over 66 acres. Highlights include the Italian and Dutch gardens, where visitors get a wonderful sight of the lake with its picturesque boathouse bridge. Stroll down to the lake and look back for one of the best views of the hall, framed by giant redwoods.

Garden lovers are also drawn to the Rose and Azalea Gardens, where many types of rare orchids can be found in full bloom during June. Wander a little further from the hall deeper into the woodland and follow the sound of cascading water to discover the Water Garden, a beautiful, tranquil space.
