Falling into horticulture

Mark grew up on the Isle of Man, where his mum and dad were both a nurseryman and a florist – and so was surrounded by plants and flowers all the time. Although he had little interest at a young age, after leaving school (following GCSEs) he fell into landscape and horticulture.

When he first started out, Mark carried out a national diploma in horticulture via the Master of Horticulture qualification. Since then, he has worked at the RHS for seven years and is a member of the gardens and horticulture team.

Out-of-the-box thinking

Mark has a passion for horticulture and working at the RHS gives him the opportunity to be around a community of inspired and creative individuals who are keen to discuss various garden areas, plants, and projects, creating a positive atmosphere for the team and visitors.

At RHS Wisley, Mark and his team like to be known for ‘out-the-box thinking’ and creativity. They emphasise the importance of showcasing their work in a public garden, allowing visitors to try their ideas at home while also highlighting the ornamental aspect of gardening and the enjoyment it can bring.

“I looked into the Master of Horticulture that the RHS do and was really interested by how much sustainability fits into that as a curriculum.”
