A rhizomatous perennial with purple, erect stems up to 60cm tall, bearing lance-shaped, stalkless dark purplish green leaves, mainly in whirls. Bearing 1-4 pendant, mauve bell-like flowers in the leaf axils, from late spring to mid-summer.
