A succulent, branching sub-shrub to 1m tall, producing large rosettes of fleshy, spoon-shaped leaves. The leaves emerge light green but age to very dark purple, almost black. Darkest leaf colour is achieved when grown in full sun

How to grow
Cultivation
Under glass, grow in a peat-free, loam-based potting compost with added extra grit. Water moderately and apply a balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season; water sparingly in winter. See houseplant cacti and succulent cultivation for further advice
