A broad, tree-like, deciduous shrub to 3m tall. Leaves are ovate with scalloped edges narrowing to a point, reddish green in summer, turning bright shades of pink and red in autumn. Small, pale green flowers in summer are followed by a profusion of red-pink capsules that split to reveal red seeds
