Deciduous, clump-forming herbaceous perennial to about 2m tall, with elliptical, glossy, bright green leaves and reddish-purple stems topped by bell-shaped shiny purple flowers to 5cm long, with yellow anthers and heavily ribbed tepals margined with a silvery-purple band, recurved at the tips. Flowers from early summer to early autumn, are followed by feathery, silvery seedheads

How to grow
Cultivation
Plant in a moisture-retentive, well-drained soil, with the roots and base of the plant kept cool and shaded by other plants or with a layer of pebbles at the base. Plant with the crown of the clematis level with the soil. Ideal for growing through plants in the herbaceous or shrub border. See clematis cultivation

Propagate by division or take basal softwood cuttings of herbaceous (non-climbing) clematis in spring
