Floral Fantasia inspiration from Hyde Hall

The Floral Fantasia returns again this year, providing a showcase of the latest new bedding cultivars to inspire visitors

Located near to the Global Growth Vegetable Garden, the bedding displays feature some 4,000 individual plants and 70 new cultivars. New this year is a rudbeckia trial of 90 cultivars, including some never shown before. ‘We are extremely grateful to garden writer, broadcaster and horticulturist Peter Seabrook for his ongoing support of Floral Fantasia at Hyde Hall,’ says Curator Robert Brett.

Compact Peruvian lilies

Alstroemerias give long-lasting displays of patterned blooms
Alstroemerias or Peruvian lilies feature strongly in the Floral Fantasia every year; they're easy to grow and provide dazzling displays of colour. Last year the planting included masses of creamy, yellow-throated Alstroemeria Inticancha Series. These bushy plants are easy to grow and make excellent cut flowers.

Filigree grasses

A silvery cultivar of Miscanthus knits the planting together
Bold clumps of Miscanthus sinensis ‘Gracillimus’ form a permanent background to the Floral Fantasia garden on Hyde Hall's hilltop. This compact miscanthus has lovely fine-textured leaves; their white midribs give the whole plant a silvery air. Grasses such as this make ideal partners for flowering bedding plants as they have such a contrasting texture.

Daisies and angels

Angelonia and Argyranthemum provide warm purple flowers
At the front of the display, gold and pink Argyranthemum Grandaisy Series marguerites flank rosy Angelonia Serena Series. Open daisy-type flowers such as marguerites are much loved by many types of pollinating insects. See our Plants for Pollinators pages for further information.
