About the garden
Owned by
The Paxton Trust
The grounds and gardens of Paxton House were originally designed by Robert Robinson around 1756. The Palladian mansion sits in the heart of the estate, surrounded by colourful Edwardian-style herbaceous borders, extensive woodland, and riverside walks along the Tweed, offering views to the world-famous Union Chain Bridge.
Maintained by our expert head of gardens and our dedicated team of volunteers, the gardens feature lovely areas that create interest throughout the year, with beautiful vibrant displays. The informal planting of some gardeners' favourites within our 80 acres creates the ideal space for exploration and relaxation.
The Well Garden is a mass of pink and orange candelabra primulas among ferns, hostas and a splendid Viburnum plicatum. Spring-flowering bulbs give way to an array of hardy perennials and herbaceous borders are particularly stunning throughout June. The variety of mature trees on the estate provides a spectacular show in autumn.
Restored in 2017 and nestled into the dene, our working waterwheel has daily demonstrations and is an extraordinary feat of engineering.
Pick up a cuppa or picnic from our tearoom and enjoy with a view or be inspired by the gardens and find a plant, grown lovingly by our garden team, to take home from our dedicated shop. With seasonal trails, children’s activities, den building and a rustic adventure playground, our gardens are a must-see for all ages, no matter the season.
