About the garden
The garden at Nunnington Hall is the perfect place to enjoy some peace and quiet. Restful hidden spots, flamboyant peacocks and colourful flowers offer a wide variety of features to enjoy.
Nunnington’s garden has been managed fully organically since 2002, reviving traditional horticultural methods while also embracing modern techniques and technology. You can see much of this work in practice as you explore. This includes a four-bay composting system, a wormery, fruit cages and an organic vegetable patch. Every year, sheep fleece is packed around the base of young fruit trees. Not only does this suppress weed growth and help the soil to retain moisture, but it also slowly releases nutrients as the fleece decays into organic mulch. Wildflower meadows intersected by grassed pathways create a delicate balance between formality and environmental stewardship.
Features include a rose garden, an iris garden and a terraced walk. Topiary cones stand on the south lawn in homage to the garden’s 17th-century past.
The garden sits alongside the River Rye, which plays host to a range of wildlife. Spend some time by the river and you may just catch a glimpse of brown trout, otters, kingfishers and swans.
The garden is fully accessible for all visitors, with gravelled paths and grassed slopes.
