About the garden

The Cholmondeley family have lived on these lands since Norman times, with the castle built in the early 19th century by the first Marquess. Nestled within historic parkland, the 70 acres of beautiful gardens offer magnificent displays throughout the seasons, and are filled with colour and botanical delights. Discover the romantic temple and Folly Water Gardens enclosed by specimen trees and many varieties of shrubs; the Rose Garden with more than 250 roses; glade; arboretum; and the ornamental woodland upon Tower Hill.

A garden highlight is Lavinia Walk, a magnificent 328ft double herbaceous border, dedicated to Lady Lavinia Cholmondeley. The lakeside nature trail is home to many different varieties of waterfowl and freshwater fish, and its picnic and children’s play area afford magnificent views of Cholmondeley Castle across the Mere.

The historic St. Nicholas family chapel, located in the park, is well worth a visit to enjoy its stained glass altar windows, ornate panelling and peaceful atmosphere; while the cafe is situated in the heart of the gardens offering fresh coffee, freshly baked cakes, light lunches and locally sourced produce. This truly is a garden for everyone.
