About the garden
The Backhouse family has restored the garden over the past 16 years. The Backhouse Heritage and Education Centre tells the story of their forebears, the famous Quaker Backhouse family of botanists and bankers, whose achievements are revived by this sixth generation. Find out about the historic Loch that disappeared, the Covenanter’s ruined Woodland tomb and the family’s links to Mary Queen of Scots and Charles Darwin.
Stroll under Scotland’s longest scented rose archway along a ‘DNA’ pathway with a central flower bed made from cathedral rose window stone. The historic Walled Garden, themed around art and science, offers the opportunity to take a step back and relax among changing seasonal plantings. In spring, the Scientific National Collection of Narcissus ‘Backhouse’ cultivars blooms, inspiring Scotland’s National Daffodil Festival held at the estate each April.
